Former Congressional candidate Elizabeth Heng (R–Fresno) announced Thursday that she is running for U.S. Senate.
Heng will join the field to take on recently-appointed Alex Padilla in 2022. California Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed Padilla to fill Vice President Kamala Harris’ Senate seat last December.
In a video announcing her candidacy, the Republican blamed “career politicians” for their damaging policies over the last year during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“You’ve been told you can’t go outside, you can’t go to church, you can’t go to school, you can’t say your final goodbyes to loved ones,” Heng said. “Coronavirus is impacting all of us. We are hurting.
